How AI and assisted technology can serve people, support accessibility, and create tools that genuinely improve lives rather than replace human connection.

AI & Assisted Technology for Good

Technology is only as meaningful as the lives it improves. At DanielCook.fyi, we believe that AI and assisted technology should serve people -- not replace them. When designed thoughtfully, these tools can support accessibility, amplify creativity, and build bridges between individuals and communities.

What We Mean by "Assisted Technology"

Assisted technology is any tool, system, or device that helps people do things they might otherwise struggle with. This includes screen readers, voice assistants, predictive text, hearing aids, mobility devices, communication boards, and increasingly, AI-powered tools that learn and adapt to individual needs.

The word "assisted" is deliberate. Technology assists -- it does not lead, dominate, or decide. The human remains at the centre.

AI as an Accessibility Tool

AI voice technology, like the Beacon Voice project, demonstrates how artificial intelligence can support accessibility in meaningful ways:

  • Text-to-speech narration makes written content available to people with visual impairments, learning difficulties, or those who simply prefer listening.
  • Voice cloning allows creators to produce consistent, high-quality audio content without the physical demands of prolonged recording sessions.
  • Language processing helps make complex information more accessible through summarisation, simplification, and translation.
  • The Beacon Voice Example

Beacon is a professional AI voice clone built on ElevenLabs, designed to narrate the Tree of Life audiobook and future content. It represents how voice technology can extend a creator's reach without compromising authenticity. The voice sounds natural, warm, and human -- because it was trained with care and intention.

    Human-AI Collaboration

The best outcomes happen when AI amplifies human creativity rather than replacing it. A writer uses AI to narrate their words. A community builder uses technology to connect people. A person with a disability uses assistive tools to participate fully in the world.

This is not about building the most powerful AI. It is about building the most helpful one.

    Ethical Considerations

    Using AI responsibly means:

  • Being transparent about when AI is involved
  • Ensuring accessibility rather than creating new barriers
  • Maintaining human oversight and editorial control
  • Protecting user privacy and data
  • Designing for inclusion from the start
  • Technology That Serves Community

At its best, technology strengthens community rather than fragmenting it. The HelpWell platform uses technology to connect neighbours. The Beacon Voice uses AI to share stories. The Knowledge Centre uses the web to make wisdom freely available.

Technology is a tool. What matters is what we build with it.
